Doral Academy shortstop Anabela Abdullah helped Team USA win the inaugural U-15 Women’s Softball World Cup Championships in Tokyo.

Team USA, which went 7-1 in the prestigious tournament, defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 in the finals. Abdullah batted third in the championship game. In the semifinals, Team USA beat Chinese Taipei 10-0.

Earlier in the event, Team USA also beat Puerto Rico 6-0. Abdullah went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs. Team USA dominated the Philippines 20-0 with Abdullah going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, three RBI and three runs.

Team USA also defeated Brazil 10-0, Czech Republic 15-0 and Mexico 5-1. After going 5-0, Team USA suffered its lone loss, dropping a close one to Japan 2-1.

Team USA out scored the opposition 70-3 with six shutouts. Abdullah recorded five of the team’s 60 RBI.

As a freshman last season, Abdullah earned Miami Herald All-Dade first team honors. She helped Doral reach the state semifinals.

Sailing

Palmer Trinity siblings Brayden and Kyla Benesch were outstanding at the Cressy National High School Sailing Championships, organized by the South East Interscholastic Sailing Association (SEISA) District and hosted at the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans.

Brayden is a senior and Kyla a freshman.

The regatta featured 36 young competitors from various schools in two exciting days of racing.

Kyla Benesch won the gold medal in the ILCA 6 Girls’ Division, securing her position as the top-ranked high school sailor in this division nationwide. Brayden Benesch earned the silver medal in the ILCA 7 Division and holds the ranking of second-best high school sailor in the ILCA 7 Division in the United States.

Since 1990, the Cressy National High School Championship has been designated by the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) as the ISSA National Singlehanded Championship.

“We are very proud of what Kyla and Brayden accomplished at this recent sailing event,” said Patrick Roberts, Head of School at Palmer Trinity. “The fact that they are siblings was also special, and we look forward to watching how they both progress.”

Golf

Columbus High School alum Christian Figueredo, a freshman golfer Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, won the Dade Amateur Championship. He shot a 5-under (67) on day two to win it.

Figueredo, who scored a winning 73-67–140, was a senior at Columbus last year as part of a boys’ golf team that finished second at state. He now starts on the FGCU’s men’s team.

Columbus juniors Hubert Ramirez (75-73–148) and Victor Herrera (71-77–148) tied for 10th at the Dade Amateur Championship, and defending champ Daniel Vanososte of Divine Savior was fifth (72-73–145).

Soccer

High school soccer is underway, and Julian Stanish had a hat trick for the Chaminade-Madona girls’ team in its regular season opener, and Raul Leyva of NSU University School boys’ soccer scored six goals to start the season.

West Broward High School soccer alum Sydney Bellamy, Class of 2021, was selected to the 1st team All SWAC Conference. A collegiate junior, she is the starting goalkeeper for Southern University in Louisiana.
