John John Florence Remembers Sailing the Pacific Searching for Waves (Clip)

John John Florence doesn’t post on social media very often.

But the most recent Instagram post from the two-time surfing world champion is pretty amazing.

It appears to be a flashback clip from his 2020 sailing series, “Vela,” where he ventured through the Pacific Ocean to the Line Islands searching for new waves.

The post above is captioned:

“Get out there and explore. 001. Advice To My Younger Self”

In the clip, all three Florence brothers, John John, Nathan, and Ivan, are getting serious family time while exploring on a sailboat.

John John narrates the video, saying:

“That was the whole goal, we just wanted to get away and just go and find some new waves.

“I think when you’re surfing a new wave that you’ve never seen or heard about or anything, it’s pretty incredible.

“You know, one example is we showed up at a reef and then eventually the swell came. We had all these images in our mind of what we thought the wave would do, and then it just does something completely different.”

“Vela” was released in 2020 after the surf star severely injured his knee surfing on the World Tour. He then underwent surgery before setting sail from his home island of Oahu on a month-long voyage across the Pacific with his brothers and a few friends.

The series offered a refreshing addition to people’s watch lists while they hunkered down during the pandemic lockdown.

All four parts of “Vela” can be viewed on John John’s YouTube channel.
