We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions
Of the world
It’s Olympics day at Sail Caribbean! We awoke at 7:30 off the shore of the beautiful Sandy Cay National Park (est 2008), but we knew today was not like other days. It was Olympics. We had approximately 1.5 hours to mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually prepare for one of Sail Caribbean’s best traditions. Within those 1.5 hours, each boat ate a breakfast of champions, decorated a boat flag, and created a team chant. At 9:45, we set foot on the beaches of Sandy Cay with a fender, fins, mask, and most importantly team spirit.
Our festivities began with a dizzy fender race, where each member of the boat must run to a fender in mask, fins, and a snorkel, run around it 3 times, and sprint back as fast as possible, handing off the snorkel gear to the next member of their boat. The first boat to finish wins. Next, we chased, tackled, and buried one counselor from each respective boat and made them into a charming piece of sand art. Our festivities continued with a synchronized swim that ranged from cool backflips to engaging re-enactments of respective boat events. Lastly, we concluded with the greatest test of teamwork: tug-of-war. “One two three HEAVE. One two three HEAVE. One two three HEAVE.” – every camper during tug of war
Following Olympics, we up anchored/de-moored and sailed a close hauled course to Scrub Island. There, we docked, deep cleaned our boats, and enjoyed the market, pools, shops, and glorious land showers that Scrub has to offer. Each boat concluded their day with a quiet night on the boat closer than before thanks to Olympics.
